RICHIE’S PLANK EXPERIENCE
Richie’s Plank is a virtual reality fear of heights experience created by Toast VR and released in 2017. Consistently among the top selling apps on Oculus Quest, it’s turned out to be a hit in the VR world with its Plank Cloning System allowing players to bring a real life plank into the game. Richie’s Plank Experience is among the best experiences for showing off the immersive power of VR, leading to its success across more than 5 different VR platforms.
For Toast I supported Richie’s Plank Experience in a hybrid QA/design from 2020-2022. As a live service title I worked with the dev team on periodic updates and shipped the standalone Santa Simulator experience ported from PCVR to Quest.
Previously, I was Marketing Coordinator for this title, moving to Community Manager from early 2020. My work here involved adapting my experience to the niche of VR, in particular the fact that Richie’s Plank is an experience, rather than a game. This led me to use creativity to develop unique selling points and more guerrilla brand awareness tactics than might usually be expected in games marketing. In this role, my tasks were highly varied, including but not limited to:
social media content coordination + analysis
community and engagement management
media relations
content creation
image and video editing
customer relations (VR arcades and exhibitors)
As part of a small team I also had the opportunity to take part in production and design of our upcoming titles, which included level design and playtest management. During my time at Toast I was exposed to all elements of game development, in particular the nature of the VR industry and independent games development.
